The Sea and the Imagination: Sam Llewellyn’s Creative Writing Break at Hell Bay

This October we're delighted to say that island writer and novelist Sam Llewellyn will be hosting a writing course at Hell Bay, as part of a special four night break.

Sam Llewellyn was born on Tresco. He has written many novels, including four – two for adults, two for children - set on Scilly, as well as books and articles on the history, horticulture, myths and sea life of the islands. One of his most popular Scillonian novels is the superbly-named "Hell Bay".

His books have been published in a dozen languages and applauded by a spectrum of critics ranging from the New York Times through the London Literary Review and Daily Mail to Yachting Monthly magazine. He writes columns for yachting magazines and Hortus, the gardening quarterly.

He is a contributor of articles about psychogeography, gardens and boats to the Times and the Daily Telegraph, an occasional writer for the Tresco Times, and Editor and Publisher of the Marine Quarterly.

He has taught writing at the Arvon Foundation, Cardiff University, and in universities around the world. The October 2014 course will concentrate on writing about islands and the sea with detailed observation, wit and an acute sense of story.

Each day of the course begins with a morning tutorial from Sam, while the afternoon is spent writing. Each evening there will be a review of what has been written. This break includes four nights' accommodation at Hell Bay on a dinner bed and breakfast basis, return flights from Land's End, boat transfers, travel insurance and all tutorials. Prices start from £835 per person.
